Located prominently in southern Portugal, the Algarve is a sun-drenched paradise where golden cliffs meet shimmering turquoise waters. Known for its dramatic coastline, charming sea caves and laid-back vibe, the Algarve offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re sharing a romantic dinner at a vineyard under the stars, kayaking through the magical Benagil caves, or savouring the region’s famous piri piri chicken and fresh-off-the-boat seafood, every experience here feels like a story worth telling. This was our first international trip together and it left a lasting impression. Here are the top things to do when visiting the Algarve.

Exploring the Famous Benagil Caves: How to Visit by Kayak or SUP

Exploring the Benagil Caves is one of the most unforgettable experiences in the Algarve. These awe-inspiring sea caves are renowned for their striking natural beauty, and natural skylight known as the “Eye of Benagil”. You can climb above to the top of the cave and peer through the eye, but being fenced off, doesn’t provide the best view. Instead, the eye allows sunlight to illuminate the cave and sandy beach within, creating a magical atmosphere and the photo opportunities.

Find parking near Benagil beach and hire a kayak or paddleboard on the beach front. We hired a two person kayak and paddled a short distance to the cave. From within, it is a nice place to relax and marvel at its serene beauty. After making our way back to Benagil beach, we dined at Casa Lamy. Despite it’s average reviews (mostly for pricing), we ordered seafood and loved dining on the terrace overlooking the beach. Whether you’re paddling through crystal-clear waters in a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard, visiting the Benagil Caves offers an unparalleled adventure that cannot be missed.

Dining at Morgado do Quintão: A Unique Vineyard Experience in the Algarve

For a truly unforgettable dining experience in the Algarve, head to Morgado do Quintão. This family run estate showcases farm-to-table dishes crafted from local ingredients, all paired with the estate’s award-winning wines. Set under ancient olive trees and surrounded by rolling vineyards, the atmosphere is intimate, authentic, and distinctly Portuguese.

We booked a dinner reservation and arrived to find, to our surprise, that we were the only guests. Our evening began with a short tour of the vineyards, glass in hand, as the sun dipped below the horizon. After the tour, we made our way to the table, where we enjoyed a private dinner with three courses of traditional Algarvian dishes, each perfectly paired with their wines. It’s a must-do for food and wine lovers seeking a genuine connection with the region’s rich culinary traditions.

Exploring Ponta da Piedade: The Algarve’s Most Breathtaking Coastal Cliffs

No trip to the Algarve is complete without visiting Ponta da Piedade, one of the most stunning natural landmarks in southern Portugal. Just a few minutes from Lagos, this breathtaking stretch of coastline features golden cliffs, hidden sea caves, and crystal-clear waters that glow in the sunlight. You can admire the beauty of Ponta da Piedade from the clifftop walking trails, take a boat tour through the caves, or even kayak beneath the towering rock formations.

Park along the road leading up to Ponta da Piedade, then head out on foot to explore. We captured some amazing photos and wandered along the cliff edges, taking in the dramatic rock formations scattered along the coastline. With its towering arches, hidden caves, and sweeping ocean views, Ponta da Piedade offers some of the most unforgettable scenery and best photo opportunities in the Algarve.

Fresh Seafood and Cataplana: Must-Try Flavours of the Algarve

When it comes to dining in the Algarve, fresh seafood is a must. Along the coast, you’ll find everything from grilled razor clams to fresh oysters sourced just hours before they hit your plate. For an authentic taste of the region, don’t miss trying a traditional cataplana — a rich seafood stew cooked in a copper clam-shaped pot that locks in all the flavours of the sea. The cataplana showcases the Algarve’s culinary heritage in every savoury, aromatic bite.

We had our first taste of cataplana right on the beach at A Concha in Praia da Luz. Afterwards, we couldn’t get enough and hunted it down again at Don Sebastiao while exploring Old Town Lagos. Every spoonful of the rich, hearty stew warmed our souls and left us craving more. We satisfied our cravings by filling nearly every other meal with fresh seafood. On several beach outings, we found a restaurant serving delicious shellfish with oceanside views. Whether you’re dining at a casual beach shack or a stylish coastal restaurant, fresh seafood and cataplana are essential Algarve experiences.

Why Baía da Luz is the Perfect Place to Stay in the Algarve

We opted for Luz for its relaxed yet charming beachside vibe. With Lagos just ten minutes drive away, it was the perfect touch of being close to attractions whilst experiencing living like a local. The pool side apartments at Baía da Luz were spacious, with fully equipped kitchens and patios. With two outdoor pools, tennis courts, and beautifully landscaped gardens, Baía da Luz felt like a private retreat while keeping you close to the laid-back charm of Luz village.

It is also conveniently located 200 metres walk to Praía da Luz beach, giving unrestricted access to sand and sun. Additionally, those that love nature and coastal walks can find the start of the Luz to Lagos hike closeby. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a beach holiday, or a base for exploring the Algarve, Baía da Luz delivers a relaxed, high-quality stay in one of the Algarve’s most beautiful seaside towns.

Discovering Faro’s Charm: Portugal’s Southern Gateway

As Portugal’s southern gateway, Faro blends rich cultural heritage with laid-back coastal vibes. Wander through its cobbled Old Town, enclosed by medieval walls, and you’ll discover hidden courtyards and centuries-old churches. Additionally, hop on a boat to explore the untouched Ria Formosa islands, savour fiery piri piri chicken, or sip a cocktail with views over the vibrant marina. Undeniably, Faro has so much to offer and adds the perfect blend to an Algarve getaway.

When we planned our trip, we spent 5 nights in the Algarve before taking a bus across to Seville. Faro was the perfect gateway but also a destination in its own right, and we made sure to spend some time exploring its charm. We found a local gem, Churrasqueira O Recife that specialises in piri piri chicken. The authenticity and taste blew us away. We took a boat tour to discover the Formosa Islands for a lovely afternoon sighting the fauna and exploring the lighthouse and beach on Farol island. The lighthouse marks the southernmost point of Portugal! Finally, before our bus journey to Seville, we had lunch at Restaurante Ria Formosa and soaked in the marina views. It capped off a perfect end to 5 unforgettable nights in the Algarve.

Whether you’re kayaking through the breathtaking Benagil Caves, savouring a sunset dinner in a vineyard, or simply enjoying fresh seafood by the beach, the Algarve offers something unforgettable at every turn. From golden cliffs and hidden coves to vibrant towns and authentic cuisine, this sun-soaked region of southern Portugal invites you to relax, explore, and indulge. We hope there’s some added inspiration for your own trip and would love to hear about your favourite highlights.
